Shannon’s Irish Bar has announced that it will no longer open at its planned premises on Newport Road in Stafford.
The new venue had been due to open in the club building next to Top of the World, using the entrance previously associated with Poptastic.
However, the team behind Shannon’s said the ongoing running costs of the premises were not financially sustainable.
Around 70% of the refurbishment had already been completed, while new signage was ready to be installed and furniture had been purchased.
Plans halted before opening
Shannon’s had been planned as a seven-day venue offering live bands, live sport, drinks and an Irish bar atmosphere.
In an update to supporters, the business apologised for the delay in opening and for not providing information sooner.
The team said it had held a number of discussions with the landlord before reviewing the costs involved in operating from the building.
It said the figures showed that the premises would not be financially viable as a long-term home for the business.
The statement said: “We’ve invested a huge amount of time, money, and passion into this project, so having to make this decision has been incredibly difficult.”
Search begins for another Stafford venue
Although the Newport Road opening will not go ahead, the team said it remains committed to bringing Shannon’s Irish Bar to Stafford.
It is now looking for another premises in the town of a similar size or larger, but with more manageable running costs.
The business said it would rather take longer to find a sustainable location than open somewhere that may not work in the long term.
Shannon’s also thanked people who had sent messages and continued to support the project.
No alternative location or new opening date has yet been announced.
