Children across Staffordshire are being encouraged to pick up a book this summer as the popular Summer Reading Challenge returns to libraries across the county.
This year’s free challenge, themed “Read to the Beat”, celebrates the connection between books and music, encouraging children to discover new stories while keeping up their reading over the school holidays. The challenge is delivered by The Reading Agency in partnership with public libraries and Universal Music Group UK.

What is the Summer Reading Challenge?
The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children to keep reading during the summer holidays, helping them maintain their reading skills before returning to school in September.
Children can sign up at their local Staffordshire library, set a reading goal and collect rewards as they complete the challenge. Last year, more than 10,000 children took part across Staffordshire, with many reporting increased confidence and improved reading skills.
This year’s “Read to the Beat” theme invites children to explore the links between stories and music through books, activities and creative challenges.
Chance to win Aladdin tickets
Children who complete the Summer Reading Challenge at Stafford Library, and participating nearby Staffordshire libraries, will also be entered into a prize draw to win tickets to see this year’s pantomime, Aladdin, at Stafford Gatehouse Theatre. Please check with your local library to see if they are taking part in the prize draw.
The prize draw will take place on Tuesday 15 September.
Why take part?
Reading regularly over the summer can help children maintain their literacy skills, build confidence and develop a lifelong love of books.
The challenge is completely free to join and children can choose from thousands of books available at their local library, including fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels and audiobooks.
